The Kaneland Harter Middle School Jazz Band is an audition-based group that meets on Thursdays from 2:45pm-4:15pm. Students will rehearse and perform music from a variety of different jazz styles, and learn about jazz concepts such as jazz style and articulation, jazz harmony, improvisation, and jazz history.
Jazz Band auditions are open to 7th and 8th grade band students in the following instruments: Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, and Baritone), Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drum Set, and Vibraphone. Students who play other instruments must have prior experience in either the KHMS Jazz Band or Jazz Lab Band. Because of the limited instrumentation in a jazz band, there may be students who are not placed in the Jazz Band.
Members of the jazz band are required to attend all after-school rehearsals and performances. Absences not discussed with Mr. Loest in advance will be counted as unexcused unless for reasons of illness or family emergency. Please discuss any planned rehearsal conflicts with Mr. Loest at least two weeks prior to the date of conflict.
